The Self and Other —
October-November 2023
Identity is a prominent theme in portrait photography for a variety of reasons. Capturing the spirit of the subject is the key objective of a portrait. Faces and the narratives they convey interest people, and photographs reveal a subjects identity, personality, emotions, and experiences. In a society where individual and collective identities are growing increasingly diverse and complex, portrait photography serves as a medium for representation, expression, and investigation. We are able to draw attention to the vast diversity of human experiences through photographic depictions of cultural, societal, and personal identities.
